Apply To Serve As A WSCAI Mediator
[WSCAI ADR Program]
Mediator Eligibility Standards
The WSCAI ADR Program seeks to provide homeowners and community associations with a prompt, inexpensive, and confidential alternative dispute resolution process. To achieve this goal, persons serving as mediators must be qualified, trained, and impartial.
Any person who wishes to serve as a mediator in the WSCAI ADR program (“Mediator Candidate”) must be approved by the WSCAI Board of Directors and meet the following standards:
Standard 1:
The Mediator Candidate must submit a written application in the form approved by the WSCAI Board of Directors to serve as a mediator in the WSCAI ADR Program. The application requests information about, among other things, the applicant’s involvement in Chapter activities, including attendance and teaching at educational programs, authorship of articles published in the WSCAI Journal, and service on the WSCAI Board of Directors and Committees. The foregoing sentence is included to indicate that experience and involvement is valued, even though it is not a hard criterion.
Standard 2:
The Mediator Candidate must, at the time of application, be a WSCAI member in good standing.
Standard 3:
The Mediator Candidate must, at the time of application, have been a member of CAI, either individually or as employee of a member, for at least five (5) years.
Standard 4:
The Mediator Candidate must, at the time of application, have successfully completed at least a 40-hour mediator training program in facilitative mediation administered by the Dispute Resolution Center of any county in Washington State or, if approved by the Board of Directors in its discretion, an equivalent program administered by a different provider.
Standard 5:
Mediator Candidates who meet Standard Nos. 1-4 above and hold any of the following designations from the Community Associations Institute shall be presumed to be eligible to serve: PCAM, CCAL, CIRMS, RS. Mediator Candidates who meet Standard Nos. 1-4 above but do not hold one of these designations are eligible for consideration by the Board of Directors on a case-by-case basis.
Additional Considerations
In considering applications from Mediator Candidates, including Candidates holding CAI designations, the Board of Directors may take into account all relevant factors including but not limited to industry experience, recency of mediator training and certification, mediation experience and recency thereof, and reputation in the industry.
Candidate Rejection
The Board of Directors has sole discretion over who may serve as a mediator in the WSCAI ADR Program. If it rejects a Mediator Candidate, the Board will indicate the area(s) that require additional work or experience in order to meet the eligibility standards. Mediator Candidates whose applications are rejected may reapply after a one-year waiting period.
A person who has not been approved by the WSCAI Board of Directors to serve as a mediator in the WSCAI ADR Program may not hold himself or herself out as a WSCAI-approved mediator.
