Identifying Interests
Mediators are always attempting to see past the dispute to identify what are termed “interests.” Interests are generally identified by asking “what need is that person trying to meet.” Our interests may not be obvious to ourselves or others. Successful mediation requires identifying the interests of each participant. This recorded mediation demonstrates how interests reveal themselves. Identifying interests ensures that participants feel heard and helps them to reach agreement.
